Among her most notable experiences was in May 2005, during Memorial Day week-end. Mrs. Burke solicited partners from the community to help her provide a reward for Chimborazo Elementary School’s performance in attaining full state accreditation and making adequate yearly progress (AYP-No Child Left Behind) on the state Standards of Learning exams. She personally planned and executed a trip for 57 members of her Chimborazo staff and parents to fly to the Bahamas for a fun filled weekend basking in island sun. During their stay, they participated in a retreat on “Team Work”. The entire experience was one that allowed for consensus building, forging new professional relationships and strengthening the bonds of inter-personal relationships.
The most recent project completed at Chimborazo Elementary School under Mrs. Burke’s leadership was the installation of the city’s Storm Water Rain Garden, and additional floral and vegetable garden which included an outside classroom. Chimborazo, under Cheryl’s leadership became fully certified as the metro area’s first elementary International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IBPYP).
