EXPERIENCE

Cheryl Burke is an experienced educator, dedicated to Richmond's children.

Cheryl Lewis Burke has been a resident of the city of Richmond since her professional career began with Richmond Public Schools, in 1976.

As a fourth generation educator, Cheryl strongly believes the statement, “Teachers are born not made.”

Cheryl was appointed as a Teacher Specialist, and was promoted to Principal of Chimborazo Elementary School, in 1996. In June 2014, after 38 years of service to Richmond City Public Schools, she retired from the system.  She continues to serve the community and its students.

Among her most notable experiences was in May 2005, during Memorial Day week-end.  Mrs. Burke solicited partners from the community to help her provide a reward for Chimborazo Elementary School’s performance in attaining full state accreditation and making adequate yearly progress (AYP-No Child Left Behind) on the state Standards of Learning exams.  She personally planned and executed a trip for 57 members of her Chimborazo staff and parents to fly to the Bahamas for a fun filled weekend basking in island sun.  During their stay, they participated in a retreat on “Team Work”.  The entire experience was one that allowed for consensus building, forging new professional relationships and strengthening the bonds of inter-personal relationships.

The most recent project completed at Chimborazo Elementary School under Mrs. Burke’s leadership was the installation of the city’s Storm Water Rain Garden, and additional floral and vegetable garden which included an outside classroom. Chimborazo, under Cheryl’s leadership became fully certified as the metro area’s first elementary International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IBPYP). October 2018, Cheryl was appointed to the Richmond Public Schools’ Board as the 7th district interim member.

Mrs. Burke is a member of the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church on Judah and Leigh Streets. She also has served on numerous boards; Board of Trustees – The Richmond Ballet of VA, The Board of Directors- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Richmond, and The History Makers  National Advisory Board, Chicago Illinois.  Cheryl is a Charter Member of The James River Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.  Mrs. Burke is a member of The Richmond (VA) Chapter of The Links, Inc. of which she has chaired several committees, and served as an officer. Currently, she serves as an officer in the Eastern Area Links, Inc. She is also a member of The Top Ladies of Richmond and The Chums Inc. of Richmond.
